Searching for back pain relief?
Your search ends here!
Back pain affects more than 80% of people at some point in their lives — making it the most commonly reported complaint in the United States. Whether your pain came on suddenly after lifting something heavy, built up gradually from long hours at a desk, or seems to have no clear cause, physical therapy can help you understand what’s driving it and get back to the activities you love.
At Amber Hill Therapy Centers, our physical therapists take a root-cause approach to back pain. That means no guesswork, no generic exercise handouts — just a thorough evaluation and a personalized treatment plan built around your specific condition, lifestyle, and goals.

Common Causes of Back Pain
Back pain has many possible causes, and identifying the right one makes all the difference in treatment. Our therapists regularly evaluate and treat:
Some of the most common conditions that lead to back pain include:
Our spines are designed to move. One of the most common causes of back pain is poor posture/prolonged positions. Our modern society is far more sedentary than past generations, and the incidence of back pain continues to grow.
Back pain caused by poor posture is commonly associated with prolonged activities like sitting and standing. When you sustain a posture, you can irritate the tissues in your body, leading to pain, dysfunction, and over time even inflammation or injury.
A back sprain occurs when you overstretch the ligaments in your spine, whereas a back strain occurs when you overstretch your back muscles. These types of injuries are often associated with a lifting injury or an accident (i.e., motor vehicle accident, slip, or fall).
The discs are specialized tissue between two vertebrae (i.e., spine bones). The discs help direct our spines’ movement and absorb forces and protect the bones from injury.
The discs are particularly vulnerable to injury from bending and twisting movements, primarily when associated with lifting in these positions. The disc is also susceptible to prolonged postures related to sitting or awkward tasks.
Injury to the discs can cause significant pain in the back and lead to a more serious condition known as radiculopathy (i.e., nerve pain) in your thigh, leg, or foot (aka sciatica).
The good news is that physical therapy at our Frederick, Damascus, Jefferson, Thurmont, Monrovia, and New Market, MD clinic can help you if you struggle with pain associated with disc problems.
Degenerative disc disease is another common cause of back discomfort and is most commonly associated with aging. Smoking, certain medications, and injury can also lead to degenerative changes.
Pain associated with degenerative disc disease often presents with changes to mobility and is commonly felt when initiating movement after a prolonged position (i.e., sitting, standing, or lying).
People often describe a dull, painful ache in the lower back that gets worse with standing or walking for lengthy periods.
Regardless of the cause of your back pain, our Amber Hill Therapy Centers physical therapists can help get to the root of your problem and, more importantly, give you the tools to resolve your pain!
How We Treat Back Pain
Our physical therapists use a combination of hands-on treatment and guided exercise to address back pain at its source. A typical plan of care may include:
- Manual therapy — Hands-on techniques including spinal mobilization, soft tissue manipulation, and myofascial release to reduce pain, improve joint mobility, and relax tight muscles.
- Therapeutic exercise — A progressive, individualized exercise program targeting the core and posterior chain muscles that support the spine. Building this strength reduces strain on the spine and prevents future injury.
- Dry needling — Thin needles are inserted into trigger points in tight muscles to release tension and reduce pain. Particularly effective for chronic muscle-related back pain.
- Postural and movement retraining — We identify the habits and movement patterns contributing to your pain and teach you practical strategies to correct them at work, at home, and during exercise.
- Electrical stimulation and ultrasound — These modalities help reduce acute pain and inflammation, accelerating the early stages of recovery.
- Education and self-management — Understanding your condition is part of the treatment. We give you the tools to manage flare-ups and stay pain-free long after your sessions end.

What to Expect at Your First Visit
Your initial evaluation is a one-on-one session with a licensed physical therapist. We’ll take a thorough history, assess your posture, movement, and strength, and identify the structures contributing to your pain. From there, we’ll design a personalized plan of care and walk you through exactly what your recovery will look like — including how many sessions to expect and what goals we’re working toward.
No physician referral is required. In Maryland, you can schedule directly with one of our physical therapists through Direct Access — which means you can get started sooner, without waiting for a doctor’s appointment first.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will it take to see results?
Most patients with acute back pain notice significant improvement within 4–6 sessions. Chronic or complex cases may take longer, but your therapist will set clear milestones so you always know where you stand.
Do I need a referral from my doctor?
Not in Maryland. Thanks to Direct Access laws, you can schedule your first appointment directly with our team. If your insurance requires a referral for coverage, we can help you navigate that.
Will physical therapy help if I’ve had back pain for years?
Yes. Chronic back pain often responds well to physical therapy, especially when previous treatment has focused only on pain management rather than the underlying cause. Our evaluation process is designed to identify what hasn’t been addressed yet.
Will I need imaging (X-ray or MRI) before starting?
Not necessarily. Our therapists are trained to diagnose musculoskeletal conditions through clinical assessment. If imaging is warranted, we’ll discuss that with you and coordinate with your physician.
Is physical therapy better than just resting?
In most cases, yes. Prolonged rest can actually slow recovery and lead to muscle deconditioning. Guided movement and exercise, tailored to your current tolerance, typically produces faster and more lasting results.
