You Don’t Have to Live with Chronic Pain! IASTM Can Help

Get Back to Your Normal Life with IASTM

If you haven’t heard of IASTM and you’re living with pain, you should consider consulting with a physical therapist to see if it’s right for you! Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) is a manual physical therapy technique that we perform at Amber Hill Therapy Centers.

Our physical therapists in Frederick, Damascus, Jefferson, Thurmont, Monrovia, and New Market, MD use special plastic or metal tools to gently move and glide across the skin to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, improve muscular mobility and promote healing.

Contact us today to schedule an appointment with one of our licensed physical therapists and learn more about what you can gain from this technique!

What can I expect from IASTM treatments?

You may be thinking, “Why should tools be used in physical therapy?”

Most manual physical therapy treatments are performed with the hands, but instruments can offer several advantages!

These special tools, for instance, can effectively break down fascia (connective tissue) restrictions and scar tissue.

An IASTM-trained physical therapist will use a variety of different speeds and pressures when practicing this particular procedure, and it will be dependent on the essence of your condition and your individual needs.

These techniques have been developed to allow physical therapists to find and treat affected areas with greater precision.

These various speeds and pressures function to promote a contraction (turning a muscle one) or inhibit a muscle (as turning a muscle off).

IASTM has been proven to help with:

  • Muscle recruitment issues
  • Pain with movement
  • Motor control issues
  • Limited motion
  • Limited flexibility

When using certain levels of pressure through IASTM on the affected muscles, tendons, or ligaments, a mild inflammatory response is initiated.

While this may seem counterintuitive, inflammation brings increased blood flow and nutrients to the area and helps promote the body’s natural healing process, so you can recover and get back to your life faster.
